How to break into Human Resource Management

How to break into Human Resource Management?
I graduate from college May 2010 with a Business degree and a concentration in HR. Although, my school requires and internship to graduate I may not be able to find a job afterwards. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am not a traditional student. I am older and have several years of military experience. (Army veteran)

I guess the internship is going to be your stumbling block if you can't find a job to be able to get the internship is any part of your military career applicable to the internship?

I built a strong career in temporary staffing. I started as the recruiter and worked up to branch manager. Many managers in the staffing industry transition into HR...it's especially easy because in staffing, you have regular contact with every HR manager in the business. Good luck to you!

Join your local Society for Human Resource Management chapter, and go to their meetings to network. These are some of the best people to meet to learn more about the field and openings in the field. Some chapters actually announce job openings at their meetings others have job boards for their members. Also, if your school has a student HR group, join that as well. Are you working anywhere now? If you are, would they be willing to let you job shadow someone in the HR department? Being a non-traditional student is actually something that works in your favor, in my opinion. HR typically is a field for more mature workers, as HR handles more sensitive issues and has to be concerned about confidentiality. Good luck!

I think first of all you should read some books on how to start a business. Make a plan how you'll set up things and Analyse these things: Market Research, competition in ur area, registration of your firm, partners if any, location of the office, a website and the most important part is contracts from the corporates. Dont jump into any business without doing a proper market research. Calculate before hand that how much business is available in your area and how much competition you'll have to face.

depends on what you like more - human, machines, or nature. Based on what you said, you should do environment. I hope you realize it will pay the least of the three fields you listed.

Being in HR myself, I would have to say HR is more rewarding. You have the opportunity to make a difference for the employees and help them feel they have a rewarding position.

Project manager is into project work and is very varied. human resources is related to personnel and you need to be a certain type of person to do this job I would go for Project manager much more innovative

Amongst other disciplines, Project Management encompasses HR Management. With most companies, if they are in the process of development, they will task a project management team to oversee a business transition. HR is one of the most important aspects of those plans...however...the entire plan falls under the larger umbrella of Project Management. More responsibility means more bucks.

In Project Management (PM), you are managing all the resouces, like machinery, raw materials, humans, money etc. to reach a goal in a specified period of time. But Human Resources Mgmt (HR) is concerned in humans only. Both are great but totally different. In the long term, one has to establish himself in the field and acquire diverse skills to grow up. This will give you better paychecks. So it will be bettr to select the domai which suits you the best. That pays better in the long run

They are pretty similar in terms of being rewarding, but for different reasons. Project Management will net you the best salary, and there's a world of industries you can work for. Almost any manufacturing sector industry uses one form of PM or another, as well as any company that develops in-house Information Systems solutions. IT Project Management, or any technical sector (military systems, aircraft, space) can open doors to much bigger things, such as being the Director of NASA. That's not to say that HR can't make you money, but a supervisory, management, or some specialist position would be required. There are plenty of general office admin-type jobs in HR that don't pay too well. Of course, a lot of reward can come from being directly influential in the lives of people, and some say there is no greater reward.
